Portugal — Jersey 01
Saudade
Wine and salt.
Douro-wine red with an azulejo damask worked through the cloth, the Portuguese cross in gold at the heart and a golden seven on the back. Saudade is the word for missing something you may never have had — this is that feeling, cut as a jersey.

Saudade · Portugal — the concept
The untranslatable word, woven: longing you can wear.
Saudade has no English equivalent — the Portuguese say it is the presence of an absence. We gave it a colour: the red of Douro wine held up to late sun, deepened until it almost forgets it is red. Through it runs a damask traced from Lisbon azulejos and Manueline stonework, tonal, visible only at angle — tile-work for the body.
The cross of the Federação sits at the chest in matte gold. On the back, a golden seven — the number Portugal gave to the world — filled with the same azulejo lace, and beneath it a figure walks away along an implied Atlantic horizon. The collar and cuffs carry a chain of green and gold, wine and vine, in the manner of Minho filigree.

Every motif, named.

I. Head-on
Wine red that reads almost black until the light finds it. The cross of the Federação in matte gold at the heart, and through the whole body an azulejo damask — Lisbon tile-work translated to thread, tonal red on red, visible only at angle. The V-neck and cuffs carry a chain of green and gold in the manner of Minho filigree: wine and vine.

II. The Seven
The seven in gold — the number Portugal gave the world — filled with the same azulejo lace as the body, so up close the digit becomes tile-work. Beneath it a figure walks away toward an implied Atlantic. Saudade is the presence of an absence; the back of this jersey is what that looks like.
